Top Five Reasons Not to Represent Yourself

1. You are on your own.

You will be dealing with professionals who do this for a living on a daily basis.  You are a novice being forced into an unfamiliar and unfriendly environment.  Having a professional that knows the lay of the land is a benefit that will weigh in your favor.

2. Even the smartest people do not understand the industry system.

Not knowing how things works only helps the other side.  Every company runs their programs differently.  If you don’t know how they do things, what their tendencies are, and what are their hot buttons, you will lose valuable negotiating advantages.

3. You will not get a fair deal.

You will be dealing with paid employees of the company you are dealing with.  They are not on your side no matter how nice they may seem to appear. They will always pay you as little as possible and only pay a fair price when forced.

4. It will cost you more in the long run.

Consulting fees are very reasonable in relation to the costs of making a bad decision.

5. You will not get a second chance.

There are no "do over’s”.  Once you do a deal, you are locked in for decades.  If you realize you messed up and should have hired a consultant, it is usually too late.
